Summary: The Queensland AI Hub & IntelliHQ partnered to run the Hub’s first medical datathon bringing together over 150 participants forming 17 teams to solve real world clinical problems applying AI and ML tools to real patient data.
The team topics ranged from AI X-Ray deep analysis, Intelligent ICU Planner – AI prediction of patient length of stay to Antimicrobial stewardship dashboard and In-patient admission prediction tool.
The event which attracted 250 registrants from all over the globe was preceded with 5 informative webinars to prepare participants for the datathon. Expert researchers, industry leaders and clinicians presented a series of engaging talks about big data and AI (see recordings below).
The datathon kicked off on Saturday the 13th of June with four virtual event days facilitated via Zoom / zoom rooms. Participants were inspired with opening talks from Aashima Gupta, Director of Global Healthcare Solutions at Google Cloud and Dr Shez Partovi Worldwide Lead: Healthcare, Life Sciences, Genomics, Medical Devices, Agriculture, AWS.
Over two weekends teams of clinicians, healthcare execs, researchers, IT experts, data engineers and budding students worked side by side to develop novel AI enabled solutions to their chosen problem using a real patient data set.
Many amazing ideas were developed but only two winners could be chosen with a chest X-Ray triaging algorithm and electronic, translatable informed consent tool taking home the big prizes of 20, 000 cloud credits from GCP and AWS to support the continuation of the development of their innovations.
Sponsorship from Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud, Max Kelson, Servian and Datarwe ensured the event was a technical success! Support from Queensland Health was invaluable in bringing in a cohort of clinicians to engage in the program.
